Volunteers of America of Greater New Orleans has been "touching lives, building community" since the 1890s, when we started helping indigent women and children. Today, we extend a hand up to children, families, seniors and persons with disabilities through a wide array of helping programs in 16 parishes in south Louisiana. Since Hurricane Katrina, Volunteers of America has energized new initiatives to rebuild and help survivors recover. As part of a leading national nonprofit charity, Volunteers of America has a rich history and a promising future in south Louisiana.

Supplying Housing--For Recovery Volunteers
Volunteers of America is partnering with Hands On New Orleans (HONO) to provide much-needed places for volunteers to stay while helping the recovey.

Volunteers of America will provide the facility at 1002 Napoleon Ave., and HONO will manage it.  The facility will house an average of 65 volunteers per night.  Entergy's Foundation donated funds.

Volunteers will receive a “service learning” component to encourage them to become advocates for the New Orleans area and ambassadors of civic change in their own communities.

Celebrating the $75,000 gift are, from left, President/CEO Jim LeBlanc, HONO Director Kellie Bentz, state Rep. Walt Leger III, Entergy Director of Corporate Contributions Patty Riddlebarger, Councilwoman Stacey Head and National Volunteers of America President/CEO Chuck Gould.

Help For Veterans Who Are Homeless
An estimated 1,325 homeless vets live in the New Orleans area. We have a new program to help.  The VA has awarded us a grant for a 50-bed transitional housing program, which will be constructed at the same site as our Residential Reentry Center. Providing more than housing, the program will address core issues that keep vets on the streets.
