Lighthouse Helps Joshua Advance
Positive outcomes are delivered daily in Volunteers of America's Lighthouse program, which helps at-risk youth succeed.
When Joshua first came to the Lighthouse at age 5, the leaders knew they had a challenge.
Joshua had behavioral problems ranging from social isolation to
aggression to apathy. On medication and raised by a single mother with
no contact with his father, Joshua seemed blocked from learning,
developing and making friends.
Many at-risk kids like Joshua lack that extra attention that caring
adults can provide to help with academics, sports and activities like
music lessons.
Lighthouse fills this gap for hundreds of students at local charter
schools. During the summer, the kids enjoy the advantages of a great day
camp. Through fun activities, students learn discipline,
responsibility and other character-building traits to help them succeed
in life.
Lighthouse leaders worked closely with Joshua. By the end of the school
year, his behavior had improved and during the Lighthouse summer
session he leaped ahead academically, socially and emotionally.
The Lighthouse staff are overjoyed at Joshua’s progress and look forward
to seeing him continue to grow. Just the right kind of extra attention
can make all the difference in a child’s life.
