Gary Finds A Better Way
Gary, 17, who lives in Westwego, got in trouble on a charge of
disturbing the peace.
Gary was fortunate. The court system sent him to
a Volunteers of America's program.
Our staff found that Gary had many issues. Living with his mother,
grandmother and nine brothers and sisters, Gary needed help to stay in
school. But he got expelled from the alternative school he was
attending.
Volunteers of America staff found a solution. They got Gary in a program
that helps him earn his GED while teaching him construction skills. He
was able to earn money in construction as he learned real job skills.
Gary felt like, finally, someone had finally understood and his needs.
He wanted to learn, but he also wanted to help his family and get
started in a real job. Gary is doing well in the program and feels
hopeful about his future.
Thanks to Volunteers of America, he is
learning how to be successful in building a fulfilling life.
