willie cropped.jpg Willie Martin, a client of Volunteers of America’s Supported Living Program, distinguished  himself  long  before the  storm.
A loyal employee of the Wyndham Hotel, he was the first person with developmental disabilities in our program to own his own home.

When the hurricane threatened, Martin evacuated to Baton Rough with Lynell Casby, his Volunteers of America support staffer who has helped Martin live independently since 1997.  Their relationship is as close as family.  Martin found temporary shelter through our Baton Rouge affiliate.  Soon, he and Casby learned their homes  were flooded.  But Martin did not despair.

Casby and her husband, who works for the city, soon got a room on the cruise ship accommodating municipal employees.  She went to bat for Martin, requesting that he receive a room near hers.  She also contacted his employer, who definitely wanted Martin to return to work.  Martin moved to the ship on Oct. 31 and stayed four months. Martin’s next challenge was rebuilding.

Casban worked tirelessly with  FEMA and other organizations to ensure Willie got help.  She helped him get his house gutted, then found contractors to start rebuilding.  Martin’s house is completed.  He is back to work  and returning to the activities he enjoyed, such as attending church.

Those who know Martin say they are always warmed by his smile.  Throughout this long ordeal, Martin never his ability to smile or his spirit.
