RNDC, a collaboration between our organization and Volunteers of America National, was formed to create 1,000 units of housing for working families in Post-Katrina New Orleans.
We are committed to housing for workers in key service sectors in emerging urban neighborhoods--close to jobs, commercial services and public transportation.
RNDC Projects
The Terraces – Mid-City
On Tulane Avenue near Jefferson Davis Parkway, this $35 million project, led by our national office, is scheduled to open in late 2009. It replaces a New Orleans East development rendered inoperable by Hurricane Katrina. The Terraces will contain a 3,000 sq. ft. Community Center and Health Clinic as well as 200 one-bedroom units for low-income seniors.
1770 Tchoupitoulas St. – Lower Garden District
A $55 million mixed-use development overlooking the Mississippi River, the project includes the historic rehabilitation of a 122-year-old building, approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of retail space and 210 mixed-income rental units. A design for the site, created by students from The New School, won an award in the JP Morgan Chase Community Development Competition, held to boost recovery in New Orleans.
Chateau Carre - Gentilly
A 150-unit complex on Gentilly Boulevard across from Dillard University, Chateau Carre is in one of 17 Target Areas identified by the city's Office of Recovery, Development and Administration. This 1960s brick building had minor flooding after the hurricane. An $19 million acquisition/rehab project, it will create mixed-income apartments.
New Covington – North Shore
A $22 million, 15-acre site near downtown Covington will be developed into 35 single family for-sale homes and 94 rental units in multiple small-scale buildings designed to look like large homes. St. Tammany Parish, our partner, is providing funding for infrastructure improvements.
Gretna Square – Gretna, LA
An 11-unit development of single family homes, priced from $111,000 to $135,000, is in Jefferson Parish. The homes were designed for purchase by first time homebuyers earning up to 80% Area Median Income. The final seven homes in the multi-phase development were completed and occupied over summer, 2008.
Orleans Homeowner – Gentilly
A single-family housing initiative, this expands our successful Gretna home development. RNDC has targeted 25 sites in the Dillard University area of Gentilly where it will build new houses for sale to families earning up to 80% of Area Median Income.
