LaCHIP Outreach, from Volunteers of America's  Northshore office, helps families access the beneficial state program providing health insurance for children from birth to age 19.  While LaCHIP Outreach serves Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington Parishes, the LaCHIP program serves all children in the state.

Many parents are unaware that their children may qualify for Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program, commonly called LaCHIP, and few understand the services the program provides for Louisiana children.

In 1998, LaCHIP was created for children whose parents’ income was too high to qualify for the state Medicaid Program.  Since, the state has insured over 350,000 children through LaCHIP, yet  tens of thousands more children who are eligible remain uninsured.

LaCHIP income limits have increased, so a family of four can earn $42,400 and their children will qualify. In addition, there are income deductions for child care and for the number of employed persons in the home. Insurance for children whose family falls into this income category is FREE.

The LaCHIP Affordable Plan, starting May 1, 2008, is taking applications.  Unlike LaCHIP, it is not free.  However, a family of four can earn up to $53,000 annually and pay a monthly premium of only $50.

This program is modeled after the state health insurance program offered to state workers. It will have a $15 co-pay for primary care doctors and a $25 co-pay for specialists.  As with the current LaCHIP plan, children must be uninsured, and uninsured for at least a year, to be eligible.
