Fred: A Repairs on Wheels Story
Fred is a 75 year old New Orleans native confined to a wheelchair. Except for three months spent in Alexandria during Katrina, he hasn't left his Mid-City home in twelve years. Looking for a way to get out so he could cultivate his interests in art, music, and books, he sought help and was referred to Volunteers of America.
Our Repairs on Wheels program, which provides minor home repairs to senior home owners in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany and St. Charles, was able to fit Mr. Harper’s home with a ramp. Now, Fred can scoot safely out of his home with his new motorized wheelchair. “I now have the mobility to get outta here”, he says, reflecting how difficult it is to be cooped up in a house all day every day. Thanks to contributions from Home Depot, Lowe’s, and the Easter Seal Foundation, the cost of the ramp was only $265, a small price to pay for freedom.
