Leonard Simmons Dear Friends,

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time Volunteers of America was still coping with Hurricane Katrina, the flooding of our city and the human tragedy.

We were figuring how to recover so that we could serve the phenomenal number of persons in our community whose lives were turned upside down.

Now, in 2007, we have repaired and reopened our two housing facilities for formerly homeless persons in recovery, our Canal Street headquarters and other flooded properties.  The majority of our services are back serving people in need.  We’ve also started new programs in response to the storm — delivering housing, helping families recover, crisis counseling and volunteer coordination.

Thanks to the help and support we have been fortunate to receive, we are not only back on our feet, we are able to fulfill our mission.  I am full of pride for all that our leadership, employees and volunteers have accomplished during these trying times.  Our Board of Directors stand together in committing to rebuilding and using all this organization’s resources to continue to serve our communities.

I hope you, too, will join us as we help the city and surrounding communities we all call home.  Donate, volunteer, spread the word and remember us in your prayers.

Sincerely,

Leonard D. Simmons, Jr.
